Church Growth Conversation Sessions

February 1, 2019 Leave a Comment

Jackson UMC is hosting a 7-session Church Growth Conversation, based on the book, “Lasting Impact” by Carey Nieuwhof. Pastor Joseph Tiedemann will lead the sessions and extends the following invitation for you to join the conversation.

7 powerful conversations that will help our church grow

Over the next 7 months, I am inviting you to participate in 7 dialogs that are designed to position our churches for growth in ways that will have a positive impact on our members, families, and communities.

Each month we will gather on Saturday evenings at Jackson UMC from 6-8pm to have fellowship and discussion around the corresponding conversations in the book. We are happy to provide child-care, please sign-up for it.

Click here to purchase the book from Amazon.

You can participate in the conversations without reading the chapter, although you will be able to have much deeper conversations if you have read the chapter ahead of time. Each section is about 30 pages.

Scheduled Conversations:

February 9 – Why Is Our Church Not Growing Faster?

March 9 – How Do We Respond As People Attend Church Less Often?

April 13 – Are Our Leaders Healthy…Really?

May 11 – What Keeps High Capacity Leaders From Engaging Our Mission?

June 8 – Why Are Young Adults Walking Away From Our Church?

July 20 – What Cultural Trends Are We Missing?

August 10 – What Are We Actually Willing To Change?

The 12 Days of Christmas

November 30, 2018 Leave a Comment

American humorist Kin Hubbard (1868 – 1930) once observed “Next to a circus there ain’t nothing that packs up and tears out faster than the Christmas spirit.”  Unfortunately many of us have experienced this first hand.  By the time Christmas Day arrives we are so tired and burned out that Christmas seems anti-climactic and devoid of much of the joy that is supposed to be associated with the season; Peace and Goodwill seem hard to find.

Part of the reason for this is due to the modern secular marketing hype of the season, which largely omits the relationship and observance of the traditional Christian liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. [Read more…]

Happy Thanksgiving

November 14, 2018 Leave a Comment

HappyTG2The following offers a little perspective about the origin and religious roots of Thanksgiving.  Often we associate the Pilgrims with the tradition of Thanksgiving in America, but Thanksgiving as we know it today did not start until much later in America’s history, and it took a woman and two U. S. Presidents to create this uniquely American holiday.

While U. S. Presidents and/or Congress have celebrated random days of thanksgiving since the birth of our nation, it was not until 1863 that it became a official annual event. [Read more…]

Earth Day Observance

April 13, 2018 Leave a Comment

Sunday, April 22nd is Earth Day. The first Earth Day was celebrated in America on this date in 1970 and is credited with raising awareness of environmental issues globally. Today, over 1 billion people in 196 countries observe Earth Day each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

Being good stewards of God’s creation is also a social principle of the United Methodist Church, which in part states, “All creation is the Lord’s, and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. Water, air, soil, minerals, energy resources, plants, animal life, and space are to be valued and conserved because they are God’s creation and not solely because they are useful to human beings.”

Earth Day serves as a good reminder that we need to be environmentally responsible every day.
